Pimping my Paldo!

Yes i know, the title is so 2002, however I'm old, so i can get away with it.

Dec. 5th, in the year of our lord 2007

Good news, Paldo still rocks. Forgive me for my girlish grin and giddy zest, but i do like this distro. Maybe it is because it's stable, simple and fast? Oh wait, that shouldn't be a ? but a exclamation... however, that is too fancy.

I upgraded from paldo 1.11 to 1.12With the new release of paldo, i had to upgrade. The upgrade went smoothly, for the most part. It seems that Beryl was taken away and was to be replaced by the new Compiz-fusion. Beryl had merged with Compiz (or forked back into itself... if that is possible). Either way i miss Beryl, but like any Titan, i sucked it up and went on with my so called life.

Compiz-fusion was located in the testing repo, so i had to do a simple upkg-install compiz-fusion --branch=testing to get the install going. After the install I was ready to rock my 75 caddy, if you know what i'm saying... if not, get a clue :-)

Here is a pic of my desktop with the "Snow" effect on, and i added an Oilily diaper bag image, just for shits and giggles.

Snow

Woo, you added Compiz fusion.. big deal geek!

Well that was harsh, title. I didn't stop there. I've always wanted to add pizzazz to the bottom panel of Gnome. Find it boring, i do. However, i had no clue what the name of this neat bouncy dynamic panel was. Many months of searching, and a fewX-chat session with my favourite Foresight guys, and low and behold pcutler told me about AWN.

AWN? oh... Avant-Window-Navigator

Yes. Avant-Window-Navigator. AWN is the bomb (yes i know... 2002 again). AWN was not in the repo, yet, so this is a good example of how you can easily create your own package, in your own repo, to allow for easy uninstalling, if ever needed. (more on this in another blog posting, shortly).

This pic is of my desktop and shows a static image of what would be a bouncing icon effect.

AWN is by far the sexiest piece of eye candy one can be thankful, in which, to even get a glimpse. I like the following features:

Wrap it up, Johnny

Compiz-fusion is definitely bucking the trend of shitty things that end with the word fusion, like jazz-fusion and fusion cuisine. AWN is a great accompiniment to the compositing feats of Compiz fusion. Download paldo and find out for yourself.

What's next up in your blog action?

I want to feature the best IDE known to GNOME linux, and it isn't a Vi vs. Emacs thing either.... this picture gives you a glimpse into what is to come, talk to you then.

Do you know a Linux Titan who you'd like to read about on these very pages?

I'd be happy to interview them so that other people can bask in their glory as well. Send me an email at superbnerb at linuxtitans daht cohm. Feel free to drop us a line.
